Institutional Leadership

George Jallo, MD — George Jallo, MD
Vice Dean; Physician-in-Chief

Dr. Jallo joined Johns Hopkins in 2003 as a pediatric neurosurgeon. In 2013, he became the pediatric neurosurgery division director. Dr. Jallo moved to Johns Hopkins All Children's in 2015 to launch the Institute for Brain Protection Sciences, a multi-disciplinary institute that unites clinicians, researchers and educators focused on protecting neurodevelopment and caring for children with injuries and illnesses that affect the brain.

Dr. Jallo has published more than 245 peer-reviewed scientific articles, 89 book chapters and is co-editor of five textbooks on pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric epilepsy surgery and neuroendoscopy. He earned his medical degree at the University of Virginia Medical School and completed his residency at New York University Medical Center and fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center.

Jennifer Maniscalco, MD, MPH, MAcM — Jennifer Maniscalco, MD, MPH, MAcM
Designated Institutional Official

Dr. Maniscalco is the director of medical education at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. She joined the faculty in 2018 and became the director in 2021. She is the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) and her academic work relates to clinical teaching, promoting trainee autonomy, and mentorship.

She is a former pediatric hospital medicine fellowship director and chaired the AAP Section on Hospital Medicine PHM Fellows Conference from 2015-2018. She was the 2017 recipient of the PHM Award for Educational Excellence. She completed her pediatric residency and pediatric hospital medicine fellowship at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Akshata Hopkins, MD, FAAP, FHM — Akshata Hopkins, MD, FAAP, FHM
Program Director, Pediatric Residency Program

Dr. Hopkins specializes in caring for hospitalized children and serves as the residency program director at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. She has been a core faculty educator since 2014, the first year of the program.

Dr. Hopkins has developed the Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and Patient Experience longitudinal multimodal curriculum for the pediatric residents. Her research interests involve developing a bridging leader role between Graduate Medical Education and Health Care Delivery in order to create a truly integrated clinical learning environment. She graduated from the Armstrong Institute Leadership in Quality and Patient Safety in May 2018 with a research focus on High Value Care.

Hopkins graduated from the seven-year combine program at University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Florida. She completed her residency and served as chief resident at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Jacksonville, Florida.

Jamee Walters, MD — Jamee Walters, MD
Associate Program Director, Pediatric Residency Program

Dr. Walters is a pediatric hospitalist at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. She joined the hospital staff in 2022 and serves as the associate program director of the Johns Hopkins All Children’s pediatric residency program. Dr. Walters is a clinical instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She sees patients on Johns Hopkins All Children’s main campus in St. Petersburg, Florida. Dr. Walters is a graduate of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami. She completed her pediatric residency at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland.

Matthew Thomas, MD — Matthew Thomas, MD
Assistant Residency Program Director and Co-Director of the Academic Coaching Program

Dr. Thomas specializes in pediatric infectious diseases in the Department of Medicine. He serves as an assistant residency program director and is co-director of the academic coaching program within the residency program. He is seeking a Master of Education in Healthcare Professions at Johns Hopkins University School of Education. His academic interests include faculty development around academic coaching strategies and teaching methods. He joined Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in 2016, after completing a fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Miami School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Before that, he completed his Pediatrics training and chief residency at West Virginia University/Charleston Area Medical Center. Dr. Thomas received his medical degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine with tracks in global and public health. He has received multiple career, educational and volunteer awards throughout his career.

Dr. Hannah McAtee is a chief resident at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. She earned her medical degree from the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. Her clinical interests include medical education, resident wellness, preventative health, global health, cultural competency, social determinants of health, community health and advocacy, and child psychiatry.

Dr. Morgan Smith is a chief resident at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. She earned her medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine. Her clinical interests include medical education, hospital medicine and care of children with complex medical history.

Bone Marrow Transplant Fellowship Program

Benjamin Oshrine, MD — Benjamin Oshrine, MD
Fellowship Director, Bone Marrow Transplant

Dr. Oshrine is the division chief of blood and marrow transplant and specializes in blood and marrow transplants as a pediatric hematologist/oncologist in the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute. His clinical focus is in the treatment of high-risk leukemias with blood and marrow transplantation, and his research focus is in immune recovery after transplant. He joined the hospital in 2014 after completing a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He received the Excellence in Service & Professionalism Award in the 2018 Johns Hopkins Medicine Clinical Excellence Awards. Dr. Oshrine earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine and completed his residency at Boston Children’s Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and a member of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, the Children’s Oncology Group and the American Society of Transplant and Cellular Therapy.

Paul Danielson, MD — Paul Danielson, MD
Fellowship Director, Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Danielson specializes in general surgery and serves as chief of the division of pediatric surgery at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. He was an early adopter of minimally invasive surgical techniques and has expertise in treating chest wall deformities. Dr. Danielson was named Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital physician of the year in the 2015 Johns Hopkins Medicine Clinical Excellence Awards. He joined the hospital staff in 2009.

Nicole Chandler, MD — Nicole Chandler, MD

Dr. Nicole Chandler is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, MA, where she completed her general surgical residency. She also was a Research Fellow in Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, and was principal investigator for a grant that focused on overcoming chemoresistance in pancreatic cancer.

Raquel Gonzalez, MD — Raquel Gonzalez, MD
Fellowship Director, Pediatric Surgical Critical Care

Dr. Gonzalez is a pediatric and surgical critical care surgeon at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. She joined the hospital staff in 2017. She was previously the surgical critical care fellowship program director at the Detroit Medical Center and also served as a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association Surgical Critical Care Committee. Dr. Gonzalez received her medical degree from the University Of Puerto Rico School Of Medicine and trained in general surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. Dr. Gonzalez then completed a surgical critical care fellowship at University of Michigan Health Systems & CS Mott Children’s Hospital and a pediatric surgery fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. She subsequently completed a Master’s in Health Care Management at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Joana Machry, M.D., FAAP, is program director of the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program and instructor in pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Machry received a Department of Pediatrics Teaching Excellence Award as a resident at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where she completed her pediatric residency and fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

Aaron M. Germain, M.D., FAAP, is associate program director of the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program and instructor in pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Germain was named Pediatric Resident Teacher of the Year at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.

Ashley Siems, MD, M.Ed. — Ashley Siems, MD, M.Ed.
Program Director, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship

Dr. Siems is a physician in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. She earned her medical degree from New York Medical College, completed pediatric residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York where she stayed on for a chief resident year. She then pursued her fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Children' National Hospital in Washington, DC where she stayed on as faculty until joining the All Children's team in 2020. Dr. Siems also earned her Masters in Education from George Washington University where her career interests include training non-technical skills in medicine. She is also an expert in simulation and utilizes simulation to study team dynamics in medicine. She is passionate about improving the quality of care we deliver utilizing an interdisciplinary and interprofessional approach to medicine.

Anthony Sochet, MD, MS — Anthony Sochet, MD, MS
Associate Program Director, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship

Dr. Sochet is a physician in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital who joined the hospital staff in 2016 and is an Assistant Professor on Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree at Florida State University College of Medicine, completed his pediatric residency at University of South Florida College of Medicine, fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Children’s National Medical Center, and Masters of Health Science in Clinical and Translational Research from the George Washington University. His research interests include an “-omics” approach to identifying modifiable risk factors for acute respiratory failure, machine learning to assess non-invasive modality failure, optimal nutrition delivery during critical illness, and the incorporation of industrial psychology and team science in healthcare.

Dr. Drach joined the All Children’s Hospitalist program in 2009. She is a graduate of Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at All Children’s/USF. Dr. Drach is board certified in pediatrics and has an extensive background in pediatric oncology nursing and has a strong interest in pain management and palliative care.

Dr. Hays joined the hospital staff in 2020 and is board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Pediatrics. Before joining Johns Hopkins All Children’s, Dr. Hays was an adult and pediatric inpatient palliative care physician and neonatal abstinence syndrome program director where her leadership involved creating and sustaining a new model of care for substance exposed infants and their families.

Dr. Dudas is chief academic hospitalist at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. He is an associate professor of pediatrics and associate director of general pediatrics and adolescent medicine in the Department of Pediatrics for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Dudas also serves as chair of general pediatrics, hospital and adolescent medicine at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and is program director of the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Smyth is chief of the pediatric neurosurgery division at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and director of the pediatric neurosurgery fellowship program. His specialties include pediatric neurosurgery, with sub-specialization in pediatric epilepsy surgery and craniofacial surgery with an emphasis on minimally invasive techniques. In addition, Dr. Smyth is a professor of neurosurgery (PAR) in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Before joining the Johns Hopkins All Children’s medical staff, Dr. Smyth was the Appoline Blair Professor of Neurological Surgery and Pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Dr. Irani practices in the Sports Medicine program at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. She is board certified in pediatrics and eligible for certification in sports medicine. She is involved in a research study through the Johns Hopkins All Children's Institute for Brain Protection Science that follows a group of youth athletes to learn more about the effects of sports-related concussions on a child’s neuropsychiatric, neuropsychological, and cognitive functioning. Her clinical interests include concussions, ACL injuries in soccer players, and overuse injuries in dancers.

Daniel Mauriello, MD — Daniel Mauriello, MD
Fellowship Program Director, Pediatric Cardiology

Dr. Mauriello is a general pediatric cardiologist who treats children with congenital heart disease. His areas of focus include graduate education as well as clinical interests in pulmonary hypertension and autonomic dysfunction. After graduating from the University of South Florida College of Medicine, he completed a residency in pediatric and adolescent medicine and a pediatric cardiology fellowship at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education, located at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. His research interests include clinical outcomes and quality improvement measures.

Dr. Wein specializes in pediatric and fetal cardiology at Johns Hopkins All Children’s. Dr. Wein earned her medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pennsylvania. She then completed a residency in pediatrics at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, followed by a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami with additional training in fetal echocardiography at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital in New York City. Her clinical interests include fetal cardiology, preventative medicine and neurodevelopment in children with congenital heart disease.

Jessica Laks, MD — Jessica Laks, MD

Dr. Laks is a pediatric cardiologist who specializes in heart failure and transplantation. Dr. Laks earned her medical degree from the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Ontario. She completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she also served as pediatric co-chief resident. She completed a pediatric cardiology fellowship, where she served as chief pediatric cardiology fellow, followed by additional training in a pediatric heart function and transplant fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She is also in the process of completing her Master of Science in Community Health with a specialization in Health Practitioner Teacher Education from the University of Toronto. Her clinical and research interests include medical education, cardiomyopathy and VAD management, and heart transplant outcomes.

Department Manager

Anne Altstadt joined Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in 2015 as the Pediatric Residency Manager. She provides administrative oversight for the Office of Medical Education, including both residency and fellowship programs. Anne earned her Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from Cleveland State University, Ohio and her Master’s degree in Management from the University of Phoenix. She is also C-TAGME certified in graduate medical education.

Ashley joined Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in 2016 as an Administrative Coordinator for the Maternal, Fetal & Neonatal Institute and became a Medical Education Coordinator in 2020. She is the program coordinator for the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship programs. Ashley graduated from the University of Phoenix with a Bachelor of Science in Management. Prior to the hospital she worked in a community hospital in Michigan.

Dawn Jones is the Medical Education Coordinator in the Office of Medical Education. Dawn joined Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in 2012. She completed her bachelor’s degree in Wellness Leadership from the University of South Florida in 1994 and a Master’s in Managerial Leadership from National Louis University in 2001. Prior to joining the hospital, she worked as an executive assistant and physician liaison for a large hematology oncology practice in the region.

Ashley joined Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital as a Medical Education Coordinator in 2017. She facilitates the development and initial accreditation of new fellowship programs and is the program coordinator for the Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Pediatric Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Pediatric Neuro-Oncology, and Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Fellowship programs. Ashley graduated from the University of North Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration and completed an internship with the Office of Continuous Professional Development at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.

Graduate Medical Education Specialist

Amy joined Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital as a Medical Education Coordinator in 2019. Amy facilitates resident onboarding, off-boarding and advancement, as well as Alumni engagement. She generates and analyzes annual GME reports and coordinates for the Pediatric Sports Medicine fellowship program. Amy graduated from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor’s in Education focusing on Workforce Education Development. Prior to joining the hospital she worked in the Office of Education and Curriculum and the Office of Continuing Professional Development at a medical school in the Midwest.

Melinda Yeung, MHA — Melinda Yeung, MHA

Melinda Yeung joined Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in 2014 and became a Medical Education Coordinator in 2021. She is the program coordinator for the Pediatric Sports Medicine and Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship programs. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Health Services Administration from St. Petersburg College in 2014 and completed her Master of Healthcare Administration from Louisiana State University Shreveport in 2021.
